Bremen to host the ESA Council at Ministerial Level in 2025
08.07.2024Humanity is returning to the Moon—this time not just for a brief visit but to stay. A Bremen-based startup is working to make long-term lunar stays safe and comfortable for astronauts while also developing other space habitats.
ESA BIC Northern Germany is delighted to support LIQUIFER Space Systems (LIQUIFER) as a member of its incubation program. Founded in 2019 in Bremen, the startup has already established itself as a promising innovator in the space industry and will now benefit from ESA BIC Northern Germany’s expertise and resources.
Specializing in space habitat development, LIQUIFER has quickly earned an excellent reputation in the European space sector. Its inclusion in ESA BIC Northern Germany highlights the company’s potential and promises accelerated technological advancement.
LIQUIFER’s core product consists of modular, reconfigurable interior and habitat systems for astronauts. These systems are designed for use in low Earth orbit (LEO)—an increasingly commercialized sector—as well as for lunar missions and beyond. They are versatile, suitable for scientific research, space tourism, or private missions.
An interdisciplinary team brings expertise in holistic solutions and complex space challenges. With ESA BIC Northern Germany’s support, LIQUIFER will be even better positioned to expand these capabilities and turn them into market-ready products.
LIQUIFER builds on experience from major projects, including contributions to the International Habitation Module (I-HAB) for the Lunar Gateway. Commissioned by Thales Alenia Space Italia (TAS-I), LIQUIFER developed a preliminary design and a full-scale test model with support from Spartan Space. Other achievements include interior configuration and demonstration for the Space Home Mock-Up as well as concept and prototype development for extraterrestrial living modules.
LIQUIFER collaborates closely with leading players in the space industry and research institutions, including Airbus, Thales Alenia Space, OHB Systems, DLR, and DFKI. The company is active in all phases of ESA projects, from feasibility studies to production. Integration into the ESA BIC network will further strengthen these partnerships and open new collaboration opportunities.
With its commitment to high-quality, innovative solutions and broad expertise, LIQUIFER is positioning itself as a key player in the space industry. Collaboration with a sister company in Vienna brings additional know-how. As part of ESA BIC Northern Germany, LIQUIFER Space Systems is now at the forefront of efforts to make space not only accessible but habitable-paving the way for a new era of human spaceflight.
ESA BIC Northern Germany and the regional space community warmly welcome LIQUIFER Space Systems and look forward to the innovative contributions this promising startup will make to the future of space exploration.

About ESA BIC Northern Germany
The Incubation Centre of the European Space Agency in Northern Germany (ESA BIC Northern Germany) is headquartered jointly with the Bremen aeronautics and space industries association at the Bremer Innovations- und Technologiezentrum BITZ as well as the Digihub Industry – two of the largest innovation and technology centres for high-tech companies and startups in the German federal state of Bremen. The ESA BIC Northern Germany brings new startup opportunities to the region and thus strengthens the aeronautics and space sector in the German federal state of Bremen. AVIASPACE BREMEN e.V. supports the incubatees with its network, public relations work and targeted coaching not only during the incubation period, but also afterwards as alumni. STARTHAUS Bremen & Bremerhaven is the central point of contact in the Bremen startup ecosystem and supports the startups on all issues relating to business development and financing. The ESA BIC Northern Germany is managed by Anwendungszentrum GmbH Oberpfaffenhofen (AZO), an international networking and branding company for the European space programmes that also manages ESA BIC Bavaria with three locations in southern Germany.
Since 2021, ESA BIC Northern Germany has also been offering its service to space-related startups in Schleswig-Holstein. The Technikzentrum Lübeck with GATEWAY49, AviaSpace Bremen and AZO jointly operate this extension of ESA BIC Northern Germany. As of June 2024, ESA BIC Northern Germany also offers its services to space-related startups in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The Innovation Port Wismar with AviaSpace Bremen and AZO jointly operate this extension of ESA BIC Northern Germany. There are also plans to extend ESA BIC Northern Germany to the northern German federal states of Hamburg, Lower Saxony, and Berlin-Brandenburg.
Technical support of the ESA BIC Northern Germany, is offered by Fraunhofer IFAM, German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence DFKI, DLR-RY Institute for Space Systems, Alfred-Wegener Institute for Polar Research AWI, Universities in the State of Bremen incl. many institutes such as IUP Institute for Environmental Physics, Center of Applied Space Technology and Microgravity ZARM, TH Lübeck, University Lübeck, Life Science Nord, Airbus Group, ArianeGroup, AES Aircraft Elektro/Elektronik System, Dräger, DSI Aerospace, Possehl, and OHB.
